Futurity 3D Champion Samona Zoom
Samona Zoom, owned and ridden by Doug Brown, won both rounds of the Southwestern Pole Bending Association $1,000 added 3D Pole Bending Futurity in Atascadero, CA on October 22, 2005. The duo posted a 21.154 in the first go, just nosing out Katie Jones and Frenchmans Bull who posted a 21.309 and Kate Ristow on We Go N Fast who posted a 22.001. Drawing up late in the second go, Samona Zoom watched her two rivals knock poles and went clean with a 22.096. The pair took home checks for $148 for the first round win, $295 for the second round win, and $767 for the average for a total futurity payout of $1,210."Zoom is a three quarter's sister to Dinkys Roana Samona, who I placed third at the AQHA World Championships in 1999" said Brown "Zoom has the same athletic ability as her sister, but is not nearly as good minded. I feel very lucky that she was able to put two clean runs together! Both Katie Jones and Kate Ristow had very nice, professional fillies in the futurity and I have to admit I am surprised we won."
There are more horses out of Sweet Samona Bar, the dam of both of Samona Zoom and Dinkys Roana Samona, on the way according to Brown "After our success with Dink we purchased her mom, Sweet Samona Bars. We have a yearling full brother to Zoom and a weanling half sister filly by Rene Dan Jet out of her as well". The 22 year old mare is not currently in foal, but Brown said that after this weekend's win they are thinking of trying to embryo transfer the mare to get another foal by Rene Dan Jet.
Samona Zoom is a five year old chestnut filly by the Dinky's Red Man son Red Man On Deck and out of Sweet Samona Bars. She was bred by Amy Belk, Washburn, Tennessee, the owner of the late, great pole bending sire Dinky's Red Man.
The SPBA futurity saw a sharp increase in entries, according to SPBA treasurer Tim Parker. "The 17 entries this year was our largest yet" Parker said "With the recent formation of the National Pole Bending Association and with at least five pole bending futurities on the West Coast set for next year, we expect continued growth". Parker was referring to pole bending futurities slated for Moses Lake, Washington, Central Point, Oregon, Gillette, Wyoming and Paso Robles and Atascadero, California in 2006.
